TURNING PAGES | JASPER ABELS | ANNO ZWOLLE
This attire merges old-world traditional costume with contemporary fashion, featuring delicate, transparent fabrics alongside rugged denim. Symbolizing strength and vulnerability, it honors the journey of theater maker Robby's family through meticulously adorned seashells. Its translucent outer layer reveals Robby's tattoos, serving as both a personal narrative and a statement of visibility.
On Friday, April 19th, the exhibition "Turning Pages" by Jasper Abels opened with a beautiful celebration in the courtyard of the ANNO Museum in Zwolle. Old stories and new inspiration come together in "Turning Pages". The magic of imagination and Abels' dreamy images now adorn the 18th-century gloves in the Drostenhuis.
Guests could enjoy various performances, including three talents from Zwolle. One of those talents is theatre maker Robby Hoesenie. Robby used the story of "De Wilde Deerne" as inspiration. He brought his story and that of "De Wilde Deerne" together in an impressive spoken word.
"My great-great-grandfather came as a contract laborer from India to Suriname, a stranger in a strange land. And my parents came from Suriname to the Netherlands, another strange land. And then here I am, like a sort of 'Wilde Deerne', searching for a place where I belong."
